Campaign finance reform Print E-mail
March 27, 2000

Thanks to Mccain, campaign finance reform is still a big issue. What should be done to reform it?

Since McCain brought the issue up, campain finance reform has been a major issue. What is the big deal with it? Well, most people probably didn't think much of it before McCain, but it is an extremely important issue.

First, we must ask ourselves why the U.S. has been so successful. Well, politics is one of the reasons. Laws in our country are made in a manner that is not corrupt or self-serving. Other countries have governments that are more corrupt and it makes it difficult for the economy to grow into the right direction. Corrupt countries squander public money into the wrong pockets which makes improving education and many other issues very difficult. So, if you start doing things like that, you are putting brakes on the economy because things like education help make the economy grow. Or, corruption could make it difficult to form a business or fund it which would also slow up the economy.

So, the U.S. was built on a great foundation. However, it has been corrupted from time to time and it still is today, but it is still not as bad as other countries. This corruption probably comes from giving someone or a company a favor in exchange for money. This might mean passing laws that help the corrupter protect his/her investor or making it harders for competitors. Things like this hurt America. And, the more corrupt this country gets, the less progress we make. And then eventually another less corrupt country will pass us by.

How do we make this country less corupt? Well by putting governement officials net worth in the public eye. If someone at a company gets paid $30,000 a year and they start coming to work in $3000 suits and are driving $150,000 car, the company would probably start checking the financials for embezzlement. However, with public officials, we seem to look the other way or we may say that they were rich to begin with which may not be the case.

So, all government officials personal property should be strictly monitored and they should be stalked like celebrities. So, besides watching the money, they should also be watched to see if someone else is spending for them. Spending on a public officials by private parties should be made illegal. In this way, if someone starts taking a governor on expensive trips and the governor didn't pay for it, he/she could be impeached.

Also, governement officials should be entitled to go to jail like everyone else so that if they commit a crime, they are punished. Instead of getting impeached for doing a crime, they should get impeached and go to jail.

The system should allow people with regular wealth to become elected officials. Today, it is very hard because lots of money is needed for campaigns. Campains should be publicly financed and debates should be required. These debates can be put on the internet and TV.

The candidates could even be put on buses and required to go to the same cities like a rock group would. Then the candidates could debate together in different cities together. Putting all of the candidates on the same stage at the same times would probably make it much easier for the american people to choose the best candidate.

Well, those are just some ideas. Tell me what you think.
