Recently, CEO Larry Ellison has become fairy close to beating Gates as the richest man in the world! His Oracle stock has rocketed from about $10 a share a year ago to about $75 a share today while Microsoft has went from about $90 to $75 a share. Ellison is about $13 billion away from being on par with Gates. And, it couldn't have happened to a better guy. Ellison absolutely hates Bill Gates and Microsoft. Between him and Sun Microsystems CEO, Scott McNeally, they could probably argue for hours about who hates Microsoft more. Oracle is in the business of building software, but unlike Microsoft, Oracle sells its products for thousands of dollars and sells to fewer people. They are most know for their database program which records information over the web. Nearly all major websites use Oracle's database to store customer information. Ellison along with Scott McNeally has also been one of the visonairies of the "network computer," a stripped down computer that is supposed to run on a non- Microsoft operating system that is supposed to access all software online rather than having it stored on a local hard drive. The idea has yet to become a reality, but many are preparing. Microsoft is working on building future versions of Office so that they will be accessed online rather than bought at a store or downloaded. Anyways, it would be great to see someone finally beat Gates in the wealth area. Only time will tell. |
